Sigma fp L travel photography camera

Is the Sigma fp L the best camera for travel photography?

We have a been professional wedding photographers for many years, we strive to obtain the best quality  photos in the most demanding and varied environments and so to ensure we produce the best quality images we use top of the range Nikon cameras and lenses,

unfortunately we can not take this equipment with us when we travel, if you look at our last post we have a lot of kit!.

When we started our search for the best travel camera we looked at all the options, taking in consideration the size of the camera, the  size of the lenses and the sensor size and resolution the sensor produces. We ruled out compact cameras for travel photography due to limitations in image quality, zoom capabilities, and manual controls, making them less versatile than larger cameras with interchangeable lenses.

Photographing using natural light is important to us and compact cameras typically have smaller sensors compared to DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, resulting in lower image quality, especially in low-light conditions and will struggle to capture the full range of light and shadow details, leading to washed-out or noisy images.

Compact cameras also lack the ability to take interchangeable lenses, filters or other accessories like external flash units and so limiting our control and creativity

We decided  to search for full frame cameras that where small  With overall dimension of 112.6 x 69.9 x 45.3mm and body weight of 370g and 375g for the fp and the fp L, respectively, the Sigma fp family is the world’s smallest and lightest* full-frame mirrorless cameras, we decided on the Sigma fpl with its huge 60.1 mb resolution images. as well as  being small, it’s one of the most radical cameras released in years, incorporating an array of new ideas and video capabilities.

The pictures from our travels are excellent. Its color and dynamic range are very impressive. The viewfinder is big and comfortable and being the smallest and lightest full-frame camera on the market, and combined with the amazingly compact Leica 18mm makes travel photography a joy. We use a peak design strap for secure carrying. When the light drops to low of we simply what to add extra light we have the ultra compact Godox iM30 Weighing only 78g, the iM30 is designed to carry anywhere without added bulk. The small build allows for easy portability; it can be slipped into our pocket or mounted on the fpl, making it perfect for on-the-go shooting and street photography. The shutter speed limitation when using the flash with the Sigma fp L has never been an issue.

To complete our travel photography kit we have an Artisan 35mm f5.6 a very sharp lens with the perfect focal length for general use and is so compact, love the built in lens hood!, We also take with us the Laowa 10mm f/4 pancake-style lens, an extremely compact lens  at 25mm long and weighs only 130g. It is the world’s widest rectilinear pancake offering a remarkable 109.3° angle of view. Featuring super-low distortion and excellent image quality, this is many peoples choice as a go-to lens for street, landscape and everyday photography.

Please note the Sigma fpL uses the L-Mount, allowing it to accept L-Mount lenses from Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma, including both full-frame and APS-C lenses. When we take our camera on our travels we use the APS-C lenses as they are so compact and with the 60.1mb resolution we do not mind the crop factor.
The crop factor for most APS-C lenses on the Sigma fp L is 1.52x, meaning a 18mm Leica lens on an Sigma camera will have the same field of view as a 27.36mm lens on a full-frame camera

We even mange to take a mini tripod when we require extra stability for example during night shoots, the Zeadio Metal Mini Tripod + Ball Head mount, the portability and stability of this compact tripod are excellent. and so light and small to carry

Well that’s about it and just to let you know we have not affiliation and receive no income for this article on the Sigma fpl The optional accessories we have include HG-21 handgrip accessory and the Sigma Electronic Viewfinder EVF-11 although we don’t always take these when traveling
To summarise we  think just about every photographer out there amateur or professional could benefit from the amazing image quality and the portability of the Sigma fp L
The Sigma fp L is a compact, modular, full-frame mirrorless camera with a 61MP sensor, great autofocus, and versatile features for both photography and cinematography
